Xuanwu District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Xuanwu District (Simplified Chinese: 宣武区; pinyin: Xuānwǔ Qū) is a district of the municipality of Beijing. It lies to the southwest of the old city.
It is 17 square kilometers in area, making it the third-largest district in the old city part of Beijing, and is home to 410,000 inhabitants (2002). Located outside the "Imperial Inner City", Xuanwu District was predominantly reserved for the lower class, and thus home to the cities trading guilds and shops. Although rich in history and one of the older districts of the once Imperial City, Xuanwu District is now undergoing rapid changes. In the planning for the 2008 Olympic Games, many of the district's ancient Hutong are being slated for destruction. It's postal code is 100054.
