A yellow card is used in many sports as a means of cautioning a player regarding his or her conduct, or indicating that a player is to receive a certain level of punishment. Examples include:

• Football (soccer): Indicates a caution to a player who has committed certain types of misconduct which isn't considered as serious as being sent-off. A second yellow card in a match leads to a red card and results in send-off automatically. For more details, see Misconduct (football).

• Rugby union and Rugby league: The player is suspended from the game for 10 minutes (colloquially termed being sent to the sin bin). Yellow cards are not usually used in Rugby league in the southern hemisphere.

• Fencing: A warning, nullifying the action just made by the fencer.

• Mixed Martial Arts promotion PRIDE: A warning, the third leads to disqualification.

• Volleyball, women's lacrosse, field hockey, handball

• Australian Rules Football In leagues other than the AFL, when a player is reported, they are shown a yellow card, and are suspended from the game for 15 minutes. There are by far less yellow cards given out than in soccer.

• From the football usage, the term yellow card has become a colloquial expression suggesting a warning or last chance.
• A World Health Organization Yellow Card, or Carte Jaune is an international certificate of vaccination, containing records of immunizations and vaccinations, dated and certified by the physicians who administered them. It is presented to immigration authorities with one's passport, upon entering countries which are quarantined by reason of disease.
• Yellowcard is a punk rock band founded in 1997, known for the hit single "Ocean Avenue".
• When a player of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance breaks a Law in an engagement, on the first offense the Judge will give the player a yellow card, indicating that the character will be subject to some punishment relative to the severity of the Law-breaking.
• A Yellow Card was issued to UK troops in Northern Ireland. This listed the Rules of Engagement—the conditions under which the troops were allowed to fire their weapons.
• In the UK, Police may issue a "Yellow Card Warning" to teenagers committing Anti-Social Behaviour.
• The Yellow Card Scheme is a UK initiative run by the MHRA and the CHM to gather information on Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) to medicines.
• The Yellow Card is a card giving you discounts at Scream pubs
• The yellow card appears in Crime and Punishment as a permit for legal prostitution. The expression "carrying a yellow card" is a euphemism for prostitution.
