Yio Chu Kang is a sub-urban area in the northeast of Singapore, with proximity to the Ang Mo Kio, Seletar and Serangoon areas. Deriving its name from the Yio Chu Kang Village, it is still known for lush greenery and low-density housing with high-rise public housing in its southern fringes.

In Singapore's electoral division structure, Yio Chu Kang has been part of the Ang Mo Kio Group Representative Constituency since 1991. Following the government's re-drawing of electoral division boundaries in March 2006, Yio Chu Kang is part of Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency and the Yio Chu Kang division is actually part of the town centere of Ang Mo Kio.

The opposition National Solidarity Party has indicated that it will field a candidate to contest the newly formed Yio Chu Kang SMC. This will be the first time since 1988 that its residents are voting in the general elections. At the last contest in the 1988 General Election, a People's Action Party's candidate obtained 73.7% of the valid votes to win the parliamentary seat.
