Electoral district of Yokine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yokine is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Yokine district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Yokine, and is said to hold the seat of Yokine. As of 2001, the Member for Yokine is Bob Kucera who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 8.2%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.

A bits and pieces electorate based in Perth's inner northern suburbs. It includes the suburbs of Yokine and Coolbinia, along with parts of Balga, Westminster, Mirrabooka, Nollamara, Dianella and Inglewood. Covers 24 km².

Yokine was created by the redistribution before the 1996 election from parts of the abolished electorates of Glendalough, Dianella and Balcatta. Glendalough MP Michelle Roberts shifted east to Midland, but the other two sitting MPs, Dianella Liberal MP Hames and Balcatta Labor MP Nick Catania, were left to battle the new seat. Labor's prospects were damaged further when disgruntled Labor MLC Sam Piantadosi chose to contest the seat, and Hames won with a swing of 2.6% to him. Still defending a marginal seat at the 2001 election, and now Minister for Housing, Aboriginal Affairs and Water Resources, Hames had little hope of withstanding the 6.6% swing that occurred. Given he faced a high profile Labor candidate in Kucera, the swing in Yokine was surprisingly less than the metropolitan average.
