The College has been in existence since 1959 when it was established to meet the needs of the local mining industry. With the rapid decline of coal mining in South Wales, the College has, since the late 1970's, developed a broader curriculum to assist local economic diversification and development. The number of students studying at The College has grown steadily. Since 1997 The College has been successful in increasing the number of enrolments from 4,500 per year to 12,000 in 2003. The College is recognised as being the fastest growing Further Education institution in Wales.The College offers a wide range of courses. It is particularly strong in vocational areas such as Engineering, Construction and Care.

The College offers courses from entry level to degree level across a wide range of subjects. The College boasts one of the most pro-active Business Development Departments in the country; developing and delivering training to around 2000 employees each year. The needs of local employers are met through modern apprenticeship programmes, one day training courses and bespoke training solutions.It's purpose is to act as an economic dynamo for our communities and businesses.

@ Large with major centres in Rhymney, Bargoed, Blackwood and Caerphilly. These centres together with the Communities First Centres throughout the county, have developed products and services to meet the ever changing needs of the locality.

The College has strong European links with regular student exchanges and vocational study trips to Germany, Portugal, Spain, France and the Czech Republic. It is a strategic aim of The College to increase international interaction and to actively seek to strengthen links with European countries and their educational institutions.

Part of Ystrad Mynach College is at Tredomen, north of the main college.

The Tredomen Business and Technology Centre, located on Tredomen Business Park is part funded from the European Union through the Welsh Assembly Government to provide high quality business accommodation suited to today’s new technologies. The centre brings together the main local business support agencies to provide a more focused and complete support service for local firms. The centre also houses a fully integrated training facility in association with The College Ystrad Mynach and local businesses can benefit from the use of meeting and conference facilities.
