In the winter of 1877/78, a group of over three thousand Dungan, originally from Shaanxi, led by Bai Yahnu fled to Russian Empire after the defeat of the Muslim Rebellion in the North-Western China. In the spring of 1878, they were settled in the village of Karakunuz (Russian: Караконыз), in today's Zhambyl Privince. Their descendants still live there. In 1965, the village was later renamed Masanchi, after Magazi Masanchi (1885-1937), a en ethnic Dungan revolutionary and statesman of Soviet Kazakhstan.[1]
